Material and fabrication together account for 60–70% of a coded vessel's cost, testing and documentation another 15–20% — and the last fifth is exactly where cheap quotations quietly cut corners.
Take a representative 5 m³ vertical vessel, 316L, 0.6 MPa design pressure, jacketed, with a 1 mm corrosion allowance. Cost shares below are indicative for 2026 and shift with nickel and molybdenum pricing.
| Cost line | Share of total | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Shell and head plate | 38–45% | Grade (304L vs 316L), thickness from calculation, corrosion allowance |
| Forming, fit-up, welding | 22–28% | Shell diameter vs plate roller capacity, weld length, jacketing |
| NDT and pressure testing | 6–9% | RT coverage (spot vs 100%), UT, PMI, hydro test holding time |
| Surface finish | 4–7% | Pickling and passivation, Ra 0.8 μm polish, electropolishing |
| Certification and traceability | 3–5% | Design calculation, WPS/PQR, MTC reconciliation, third-party witness |
| Overhead and margin | 12–15% | Shop utilisation, engineering hours, warranty reserve |
Three lines deserve scrutiny.
Plate thickness. Wall thickness follows design pressure, diameter, allowable stress and joint efficiency — then a corrosion allowance is added on top. Moving from 4 mm to 6 mm on a 1.6 m diameter shell adds roughly 18–22% to plate weight, and plate is the largest single line. A quotation that beats the field by 30% is usually 2 mm thinner than the calculation allows. Jacketed Stainless Steel Containers cost another 8–12% in fabrication, because a half-pipe or dimple jacket doubles the weld length and adds a second pressure boundary to test.
Radiography coverage. Spot RT on 10–20% of long seams is common and legitimate for moderate duty. Full RT on all A and B seams can add 3–5% to total cost and two to four days to schedule, but it is the only way to find lack-of-fusion defects that a hydro test will not reveal until the vessel has cycled a few thousand times.
Grade discipline. 316L carries a 40–60% per-kilogram premium over 304L, almost all of it molybdenum. On the vessel above that is real money, so it is also the first place an unscrupulous fabricator substitutes. Positive material identification on incoming plate costs a few hundred dollars and settles the question permanently.
A 10,000 L tank in 304L might cost USD 24,100 complete; the same tank in 316L, USD 31,100 — about 29% more upfront. In a chloride-bearing service the 304L unit typically needs coating repair, weld rework or replacement within 5–7 years, while the 316L unit runs its full design life. Ten-year maintenance lands at USD 8,000–15,000 for 304L against USD 1,000–2,000 for 316L. The cheap tank wins the purchase order and loses the decade.
✅ Bottom line: Pay for plate thickness, weld inspection and material traceability; negotiate on delivery schedule instead.

Verification is a document trail plus two physical tests — witness the hydrostatic test at 1.5× design pressure and review the radiographs yourself or through a third party. That sequence applies to atmospheric tanks and to high-pressure Pressure Vessels alike; the difference is only how much documentation you should demand.
Six checkpoints catch nearly every problem, and all six can be completed in a single factory visit or a two-hour video walkthrough.
Capacity is visible in equipment. A shop with a 3 m × 6 m CNC plasma cutter, a 2500 × 30 mm plate roller, two 1000 A submerged-arc sets and thirteen welding machines is forming and welding its own shells. Add a dedicated NDT room with two flaw detectors and the inspection story holds up under audit.
ASD Pressure — Jiangsu Anshengda Pressure Vessel Co., Ltd. — operates exactly that configuration across an 11,000 m² plant with a 4,000 m² workshop in Shuyang, Jiangsu, and has held its pressure vessel manufacturing license since 2008, now Class D (Category I, II, III) for carbon steel and stainless steel. For buyers comparing suppliers, that combination answers the two questions that matter: can they make the shell, and can they prove how it was made.
Third-party inspection is worth the fee on a first order. SGS, TÜV or BV witness adds roughly 1–2% to order value and converts a supplier's claim into a document you can defend in an internal audit. ASD Pressure schedules witness testing into the production plan rather than treating it as an interruption, so the inspection date and the shipment date stay in sequence.
✅ Bottom line: Verify the shell, the welds and the paperwork at the factory — after delivery, every defect becomes your downtime.

Q: Why do two quotations for the same vessel differ by 40%? A: Usually plate thickness, radiography coverage and grade substitution, in that order. Ask each supplier for wall thickness calculation, RT percentage and material certificates before comparing price. Two quotes are only comparable when those three items match, and High-Quality Pressure Vessels are defined by them rather than by appearance.
Q: Is a China factory price lower because of material substitution? A: It should be lower because of labour, overhead and domestic plate supply, not because of thinner walls. Request PMI reports on finished seams and MTC reconciliation before shipment. Jiangsu Anshengda Pressure Vessel Co., Ltd. issues both by default, and third-party witness testing is available on request for export orders.
Q: Can Durable Steel Vessels be supplied in carbon steel to reduce cost? A: Yes, where the medium allows it. Carbon steel with a corrosion allowance and external coating is often 30–50% cheaper than Stainless Steel Containers in 304L for non-corrosive duty such as compressed air, steam and neutral liquids. The trade-off is annual inspection and coating maintenance, so the decision belongs in a ten-year cost comparison rather than a single quotation. Durable Steel Vessels in carbon steel are the right answer for utility duty, stainless for product-contact duty.
ASD Pressure quotes from your process data, not from a catalogue: send medium, design pressure, design temperature, volume and connection schedule, and you receive a code-based wall thickness calculation, a grade recommendation with the 304L/316L cost delta shown separately, and a factory-direct price within three working days. OEM and ODM programmes, bulk orders and third-party witnessed inspection are all handled by the same engineering team that signs the calculation.
